Ponte Vecchio - Information

Ponte Vecchio is an iconic landmark and one of the most recognizable bridges in Florence, Italy. The bridge connects the eastern and western parts of the city across the Arno River. The bridge dates back to Roman times, but the current structure was built in the 14th century. Originally, the space on the bridge was occupied by butchers and fishmongers, but in the 16th century, they were removed and replaced with goldsmiths, who still occupy shops on the bridge today. The tradition of goldsmiths dates back to the Medici era, when Cosimo I granted them exclusive rights to set up shop on the bridge.

The most interesting fact about the bridge is that it is the only bridge in Florence to survive World War II, as the Germans destroyed all the other bridges in the city. The bridge is also notable for its elliptical arch design, which is unique among Florentine bridges. Tourists can explore the bridge, admire the stunning views of the Arno River, and purchase jewelry from the goldsmiths located on the bridge.
