Gijón, also known as Xixón in Asturian, is a coastal city located in the northern region of Spain, in the province of Asturias. With a rich history that dates back to the Roman Empire, Gijón is a vibrant city with a unique blend of modern and traditional culture. In ancient times, Gijón was known as Gigia, and it became an important port for the Roman Empire during the 1st century AD. Later on, in the Middle Ages, it was conquered by the Kingdom of Asturias, and it became a key commercial center for the region. Today, visitors can explore the remnants of this past at places such as the Roman Baths of Campo Valdés and the Revillagigedo Palace, a neoclassical building that once served as a residence for the nobility. Besides its historical sites, Gijón is also well-known for its gastronomy, especially its seafood cuisine. Visitors can sample fresh seafood dishes from various local restaurants and bars. The city is also home to a number of cultural institutions such as the Jovellanos Theater and the Laboral City of Culture, a massive multidisciplinary cultural complex. Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the fact that Gijón hosts the Asturias International Tennis Tournament every year, which attracts world-renowned tennis players, while soccer fans can watch matches at El Molinón Stadium, one of the oldest soccer stadiums in Spain.
