Name
Ranau is a small town situated in the district of the same name in the Sabah state of Malaysia. Its name means "paddy fields" in Malay, suggesting the area had been used as rice paddies before the town's development. The town is known for its scenic natural beauty and its historical significance as a place of resilience and courage during World War II. During the war, Ranau was the site of the infamous Sandakan Death Marches, where surviving prisoners of war were forced by the Japanese to walk from Sandakan to Ranau. The march took a heavy toll on the prisoners, with over 2,400 of them perishing along the way. Despite the tragedy, visitors can pay their respects at the nearby Kundasang War Memorial. Aside from its historical significance, Ranau is also known for its many natural attractions such as the Mount Kinabalu Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the Poring Hot Springs. The town also boasts many scenic waterfalls and hot springs, making Ranau an ideal destination for those seeking a peaceful and relaxing getaway. For travelers who want to immerse themselves in the local culture, the town offers a weekly Tamu (market) where locals gather to buy and sell goods. Visitors can get a taste of traditional Sabahan dishes, such as hinava, bambangan and ambuyat, a local delicacy made from sago starch.
