Matsuyama, located in the Ehime prefecture, is a city that blends historic charm with contemporary tourism. It is relatively unknown to foreign travelers but is a popular destination for Japanese tourists. The city is known for its hot springs, historic castle, unique local cuisine, and the Shiki Theatre, which is famous for being the first Western-style theater in Japan. One of the prime tourist attractions in Matsuyama is the Matsuyama Castle, which dates back to 1603 and is one of Japan's twelve original castles. The castle is located on Mt. Katsuyama, and its grounds provide stunning views of the surrounding city. The castle has an interesting history, and visitors can explore the castle's interior and view the city from the observation deck. Another place that attracts tourists to Matsuyama is the Dogo Onsen, which is believed to be the oldest hot spring in Japan, having a history of more than a thousand years. The bathhouse at Dogo Onsen is considered a national treasure, and it is said to have inspired the settings for the animated film Spirited Away by Studio Ghibli. Apart from these, Matsuyama also offers a unique culinary experience with dishes like tai-meshi (rice cooked with sea bream) and jakoten (fish paste-pressed cake). Another interesting feature is the Matsuyama Shinonome Kaido, a road that is lined with Edo-era architecture and has over 30 shops that sell local arts and crafts.
