With a history that dates back to the late 1800s, Negril has long been a popular destination for tourists seeking sun, sea, and sand. One of the most interesting aspects of Negril's history is its association with James Bond. In Ian Fleming's novel 'Thunderball,' the fictional spy visits Negril and stays at the Grand Lido Hotel, which was inspired by a real hotel in the area. Fleming, who owned a house in nearby Oracabessa, was a regular visitor to Jamaica and drew inspiration from the island for many of his books. Another fascinating historical fact about Negril is its connection to the Maroons, a group of escaped slaves who established their own communities in Jamaica's rugged interior. Many of the descendants of these communities still live in the Negril area and are proud of their heritage, which includes a rich tradition of storytelling, music, and dance.

Negril is also home to the Negril Lighthouse, which was built in 1894 and is still in operation today. In more recent times, Negril has become known for its vibrant nightlife, particularly the legendary seaside bar Rick's Cafe, which has been a popular spot for locals and visitors alike since the 1970s. The bar is famous for its nightly cliff divers who scale the 35-foot cliffs and plunge into the ocean below, a spectacle that draws crowds of spectators.
