Historically, Pangandaran was known for being a hub of trade and commerce since the 5th century. The region was under the influence of the Hindu Majapahit kingdom which created a strong cultural impact in the area. In the early 16th century, Pangandaran came under the Islamic influence, and the region now houses numerous mosques and other Islamic architectural marvels. The town is also famous for the Pangandaran Nature Reserve, which is the oldest nature reserve in Indonesia and is home to various species of plants and animals.
