Karimunjawa, also known as Karimun Jawa, is a group of islands located in the Java Sea, off the coast of Central Java, Indonesia. There are 27 islands in total, with only five of them being inhabited by a population of around 9,000 people. The islands' history can be traced back to the 16th century when they were used as a trading post by the Sultanate of Demak. Later on, they became a vital port for the Dutch East India Company in the early 19th century. Today, the Karimunjawa islands are known for their stunning natural beauty, white sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, and coral reefs. They are a popular destination among tourists looking for a secluded and peaceful holiday. The islands offer a range of activities such as snorkeling, diving, island hopping, and fishing. The surrounding waters are home to various species of marine life, including sea turtles, sharks, and colorful fish. Apart from its natural beauty, Karimunjawa is also known for its rich cultural heritage. The islands are home to various traditional villages where visitors can experience the local way of life and interact with the islanders. Traditional crafts such as batik, basket weaving, and woodcarving can be found in the villages. Visitors can also explore the island's landmarks such as the 19th-century Dutch Fort, the Karimunjawa National Park, and the Menjangan Besar Island lighthouse.
