Brno, the second largest city in the Czech Republic, lies in the southeast of the country, just an hour and a half from the Austrian border. The city's history dates back to the 11th century, with the Castle of Špilberk being one of its major landmarks. At one time a prison, the castle now serves as a museum and an ideal location for observing the city. The city's rich cultural heritage is exhibited within its numerous landmarks, such as the Gothic-style Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul, the Baroque-style Church of St. James, and Villa Tugendhat, a UNESCO-designated site known for its significant contribution to modern architecture. Additionally, Brno has a historical underground labyrinth that was used as a shelter and storage facility for centuries. Modern-day Brno boasts a vibrant student population who attend the city's several universities, which have helped to shape the city's cultural scene with numerous galleries, art spaces and music venues. One such venue is the Brno Exhibition Centre, which hosts numerous cultural events throughout the year and is an excellent example of the city's history of hosting major trade fairs. The city also boasts a culinary scene that has taken off in recent years, with an emphasis on locally-sourced, organic produce and traditional dishes such as venison goulash and smoked meat served with dumplings. Visitors can sample these delights at restaurants such as Stare Brno and Chateau Pilnitz, or take a guided food tour with Taste Brno.
