Brasilia is the capital city of Brazil and is situated in the Federal District, which is located in the central part of the country. The city was built from scratch and was a planned city, designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer and urban planner Lúcio Costa. The construction began in 1956, with the aim of moving the capital from the coastal city of Rio de Janeiro to a more central location. The city was inaugurated in 1960 and is named after the Brazilian national hero, Dom Pedro I's, daughter, Princess Brasília. One of the most remarkable things about Brasilia is the modernist architecture, which was pioneered by Oscar Niemeyer. The National Congress of Brazil and the Cathedral of Brasília are among the most famous examples of Niemeyer's work. Those who are interested in modernist architecture will find the city fascinating. Additionally, there are other interesting buildings, such as the Itamaraty Palace, which houses the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the TV Tower, which provides an amazing view of the city. Apart from its architecture, Brasilia has plenty to offer tourists. The city is home to a number of museums, including the National Museum of the Republic and the Brazilian National Museum of Indigenous People. The city also hosts numerous festivals throughout the year. Brasilia's Carnival is one of the biggest street Carnivals in Brazil, and it is celebrated every year in February with parades, music, and lots of fun.
